“He might get away with that in Germany where he might be Mr Superstar, but this is clean! The man’s an animal!”

If you’ve not seen the 1992 British Touring Car Championship finale at Silverstone, you’re missing possibly the finest racing lap I can think of — and it ends with John Cleland on two wheels at Brooklands, smacking Steve Soper with his roof, before Soper takes them both off with a pretty optimistic* dive into Luffield. Aggrieved about losing the championship to Soper’s team mate Tim Harvey, Cleland gave one of the great sporting post-action interviews.

This same lap also features the immortal Murray Walker line, “‘I’m going for first place,’ says Cleland!” after the Scot gave Soper the finger midway round the lap, live on his onboard camera. On the BBC. It doesn’t get much better.
