At the start of the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, Ferrari were the undisputed kings of endurance racing. They’d won seven of the last eight Le Mans, eight of the final 10 Mille Miglia, and had six Targa Florio victories on the shelf. If you had told Enzo that his stable and its fabled equine machines would enter the 2023 season having added just one Targa Florio win to that tally in the intervening half century, he’d probably not have believed you.
In the late ‘60s they were crushed by Ford, the early ‘70s had seen the 512 and 312 variously fail to beat Porsche, Matra et al, and then, save for customer and private entries, the Prancing Horse was gone from La Sarthe.
Enter the 499P. Ferrari returns to Le Mans, 50 years since their last effort and 100 since the first edition of the race. Destiny awaits! Ferrari didn’t just return, but they won their first Le Mans in half a century. It was just like a movie (not the one with Christian Bale and Matt Damon).
