Red wine and dark chocolate, red wine and steak, red wine and – anyway, you see what I mean. Sauber and Mercedes is one of those combinations. After Mercedes had dipped a toe supporting the Sauber team in 1987, and waded further in ’88, they put on the trunks and goggles and dove headfirst in ’89. What followed was glorious. “It was formative for me, seeing those cars,” says Sam Smith, writer, multi-decade veteran of sportscar racing, and nominator of the Sauber Mercedes C9. “The C9 was era-defining. I saw it, as an impressionable 13 year old, at Donington Park in 1989, and it was phenomenal between Redgate and the Old Hairpin, I mean, like, properly phenomenal. It was a silver, viscous wonder.” All my art is giclée printed on gorgeous 315gsm paper, and is supplied unframed. It’s a jumble of contradictions: a Porsche, but also a Jaguar; unloved, but also cherished; a TWR car, but also a Joest one; an unfancied Frankenstein’s monster that belied its bizarre origins to win back-to-back Le Mans. It’s also the favourite Le Mans car of one very accomplished Swede. “The WSC95 obviously brings great memories for me, as we won the race in it, but it was an incredibly good car,” says Stefan Johansson, who won the ’97 Le Mans 24 Hours in Joest’s #7. “The bones of the car were very good. It was easy to drive, and very predictable in all conditions.” All my art is giclée printed on gorgeous 315gsm paper, and is supplied unframed. In 1987, the TWR-run effort had been the class of the Group C field and bagged the World Sportscar Championship, but they’d stumbled at Le Mans. “We were going all around the world together like a travelling circus.,” says Jan Lammers, the Dutch ace who was often TWR’s fastest, and most aggressive, driver. “We raced in the World Championship, in IMSA in the US, tested in Australia… you name it, we did it! It's really, really hard. But if you're Benoit Tréluyer, Marcel Fässler, or Andre Lotterer, it's apparently not as hard as you think. The trio won three out of four Le Mans from 2011 to 2014, and in the process became Le Mans legends. Quietly, from a little plastic shed on the pit wall, a British woman played a large part in orchestrating each of those victories. "If I was to nominate one car, it would be the 2011 Audi R18," says Leena Gade, race engineer for each of the trio's wins. "It was Audi's first closed-top car, which opened up the aerodynamic development and set the tone for the evolution into hybrids in FIA WEC. But above all, it brought us that first win together. Hard to beat that!" Gade has good reason to like the Audi R18. All three wins were achieved with various iterations of the car, with the non-hybrid 2011 version – the car's debut – being their first. 2011 was particularly trying. By the ninth hour, theirs was the only Audi still in the race. Enormous crashes had seen their team-mates eliminated, but Tréluyer, Fässler, Lotterer, Gade and the rest of the Joest Audi team rallied and won by just 13 and a bit seconds. In the early 2000s, it partnered with MG to produce a flyweight LMP675 entry, which was fast, but fragile. That 675 became, through various iterations, a mainstay of the LMP2 class over the following years, particularly in the care of RML. “I raced at Le Mans 13 times, in all sorts of cars,” says Thomas Erdos, then racing said RML entry, and now the driver steward for McLaren’s Trophy one-make series. “My very first entry was a Marcos, and that thing was a beast. That was special, because it was my first Le Mans. But the MG Lola sticks out for me.” The RML entry, snappily-named “MG EX264 (Lola)”, was resplendent in the white, blue and red livery of gentleman driver, and main backer, Mike Newton. Newton had developed a very strong relationship with Erdos over the years, and the pair found great success in LMP2 competition. At Le Mans, where they were joined by Warren Hughes, they won back-to-back class titles in 2005 and 2006. “The car was really fast,” he enthuses. Erdos has lost little of his joy for motor racing since his move to the steward’s chair. “It was only a two-litre engine, but it was producing close to 600 horsepower. In those days the cars were so light, and when you put qualifying tyres on a car like that, a lap around Le Mans is special. I really enjoyed doing a lap of Le Mans absolutely full chat, and putting it on pole. That’s what gave me the most satisfaction. That’s what sticks out for me.” All my art is giclée printed on gorgeous 315gsm paper, and is supplied unframed. They’d won seven of the last eight Le Mans, eight of the final 10 Mille Miglia, and had six Targa Florio victories on the shelf. If you had told Enzo that his stable and its fabled equine machines would enter the 2023 season having added just one Targa Florio win to that tally in the intervening half century, he’d probably not have believed you. In the late ‘60s they were crushed by Ford, the early ‘70s had seen the 512 and 312 variously fail to beat Porsche, Matra et al, and then, save for customer and private entries, the Prancing Horse was gone from La Sarthe. Enter the 499P. Ferrari returns to Le Mans, 50 years since their last effort and 100 since the first edition of the race. Destiny awaits! Ferrari didn’t just return, but they won their first Le Mans in half a century. It was just like a movie (not the one with Christian Bale and Matt Damon). It's rare, but even in a race won by a cult hero – the Silk Cut Jaguar – the Shell/Dunlop Porsche 962C sticks in the mind like few others. "It's the most influential livery for me," says Andy Blackmore, one of motor racing busiest livery designers, whose graphics adorn dozens of cars around the globe. "Asymmetric liveries were very unusual back in the day, and it was a big inspiration for me personally on some of my favourite projects. It was designed by Rob Powell, who also designed the Rothmans livery, and it's such a clean and well-resolved livery." Stuck had placed the #17 962 on pole, with the sister #18 and #19 also right at the front, but each had technical issues. #17 finished just a handful of seconds behind the winning Jaguar, despite Ludwig running the car dry of fuel a few hours into the race. But for once, it wasn't the result that mattered, but that gorgeous livery. "It helps that Shell and Dunlop use similar red and yellow, which creates perfect synergy," continues Blackmore. "The details are so good: the number panels are integrated into the design, particularly on the sides; and the black top, section, which cleans up the lines." A true legend, indeed. I personally remember vividly being trackside for the car's debut at Silverstone in 2005, all snarling and screaming brutality. That six-litre V12 is like nothing else on earth, ear- and earth-shattering. It was built and run by Prodrive, one of the biggest names in motor racing, and though we consider Aston Martin Racing a mainstay of Le Mans Racing now, the DBR9 was the venture that started it all. "My favourite car from Le Mans is without doubt the DBR9 that won for us in 2007," says David Richards, boss of Prodrive and chairman of Motorsport UK. "With it being our first victory at Le Mans, it was very special. There was always a great rivalry between ourselves and the Corvette team, who challenged us all the way to the finish." That first Le Mans win was definitely special. The fight in GT1 was brutal, with not just the factory Corvettes to contend with, but Saleen, Lamborghini, Ferrari too. It was an era where the competition at the sharp end of the class was excruciatingly tight and you had to be absolutely perfect to win. Prodrive, with their experience across various disciplines, could manage it. All my art is giclée printed on gorgeous 315gsm paper, and is supplied unframed. But science is weird, and thus the Deltawing is as fast as an LMP2 car, using half as much fuel and barely ever changing tyres. The science itself is baffling, but the short version is that all the downforce, and all the weight, and all the grip, goes to the rear axle. That means the front can be teeny, and there's a huge drag, and weight, reduction. Thus, efficiency. "I've chosen the DeltaWing because it exemplifies the attitude of what we delivered at Nissan in a glorious period of motorsport innovation," says Darren Cox, head of the Japanese brand's motorsport program at the time of the car's race debut at Le Mans in 2012. "Its looks just scream innovation, and the project was one of the most daring and left field things the sport has seen." Daring and left field is accurate. The car was – is – absolutely nuts. Having entered the car as a Garage 56 special for Le Mans, designer Ben Bowlby needed to find a partner to help get the car on the grid, and Nissan was keen. The brand was in the middle of making GT Academy, another daring and left field idea, a reality, and Cox saw the potential. "GT Academy gave me the juice to get agreement on the DW programme," says Cox. "(Most of) the fans loved it! No spec formula here, just genius thinking from Ben Bowlby. And what a cast of characters behind the scenes. The Gurneys, Ben Bowlby, Ricardo Divilla, Chip Gannasi, Duncan Dayton and of course Don Panoz and I." Nissan supplied an engine, promotion and backing, and the car was racing, but on the track, Motoyama was taken out by another competitor, and heartbreak followed as the Japanese tried in vain to fix the car just a few hundred metres from the pitlane. Will we ever see the likes of DeltaWing again!? All my art is giclée printed on gorgeous 315gsm paper, and is supplied unframed. But for more than 75 years, its association with La Sarthe was based on glorious, but distant, history. That changed at the start of the 21st century. With Audi dominating Le Mans, VAG stablemate Bentley had an opportunity to take the best of the Audi and then develop their own car. The initial effort wasn't bad, but 2003's Speed 8 was a spaceship, taken to the very extremes of the regulations. "I knew Bentley were in the 3rd year of their Le Mans programme, and that's the best time to jump in as it normally takes three years to have a chance of winning," says David Brabham, who was drafted in to drive the #8 Bentley in 2003. "All the learning from the previous car was rolled into the new Speed 8, and Audi were more engaged in the background. Who better at the time when Audi were so dominant with their R8?" Sometimes, the bleeding edge of technology can leave the heart unflustered, but the Speed 8 was – and remains – jaw-dropping. "When I saw the car for the first time I fell in love," continues Brabham. "It was, and still is, one of the most beautiful cars ever to race at Le Mans. Even today, it can sit next to any Le Mans prototype and be centre stage." It was as fast as it looked. It was "beautifully balanced" according to Brabham, but also lightning fast, and reliable too. "The race was a great result for Bentley, a first and second," says Brabham, whose car finished second, shared with Britons Johnny Herbert and Mark Blundell. "I felt pretty empty when I crossed the line, knowing it had been a great chance to win, but that soon wore off on the podium when Johnny and Mark gave me a big hug." There's one thing, above all, that resonates for Brabham. "To be a Bentley Boy is truly something special!" All my art is giclée printed on gorgeous 315gsm paper, and is supplied unframed. "Right now, we're in a golden era of sportscar racing, and it properly kicked off when the World Endurance Championship kicked off," says Rebecca Jones, veteran of endurance racing as a PR and marketing specialist. Today, Jones is at the forefront of WEC – like the rest of the paddock, she pronounces it 'weck', not 'double-you-ee-see' – doing comms with Porsche Penske Motorsport, but she was in different colours at the championship's foundation. Over the winter of 2011-12, she was working on the launch of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage GTE. The Prodrive-run factory Aston Martin Racing team had just come off a 2011 season that is probably best unmentioned, and having limped out of the previous year, they needed to stride into the new season. "I was involved from the inception of the Aston WEC effort and I've been working in the Championship ever since," she continues. "But it all started, for me at least, at the end of 2011 when we launched this car. So it signifies the return of a World Championship in sportscar racing, and that means a lot to me." Developed from Aston's preceding V8 Vantage GT2, the GTE was visually-similar but thoroughly improved in almost every area. It worked a treat right out of the box, and 2012 was a pretty good year for the Vantage and its thumping V8, with a Pro class podium at Le Mans, as well as a win at the closing race of the WEC season. It went on to be a mainstay of the GTE class, winning Le Mans twice and topping both drivers' and teams' World standings in GTEs Pro and Am, before it was finally replaced in 2018. Most importantly, though, for one of the WEC paddock's mainstays, it was the very beginning of the journey. All my art is giclée printed on gorgeous 315gsm paper, and is supplied unframed. The 961 is one of those hot rods. Absolutely unique, it proved that the Group B rally project, turned F40-baiting supercar, could be an endurance racer. "What’s not to love about the 961 project?," says Nat Twiss, editor of @type7. He knows a thing or two about weird Porsches. "The doodles that adorn the Gruppe B test mule of this car in the @porsche.museum are one of my favourite insights into the superhuman brains that worked at Weissach in the ‘80s and their mix of humour and engineering prowess. To me it encapsulates the humour inside of the drive for performance that makes racing and ultimately Le Mans so special." The project was incredible, and unique. Few can say the basic mechanics of their car were designed for stage rallying, won the Dakar, became the world's greatest supercar and won at Le Mans, but the 959/961 did just that. The 961 was entered in 1986 in the IMSA GTX class – for sort of, but not quite, road-based racers – and won the class, though it was the only entry. More impressively, it was seventh overall. "Never before, and never again, has Porsche committed so fully to a development program to create a brilliant car across road and rally," Twiss continues. "It arrived at Le Mans in an even more ballistic, aerodynamic form. To think that this was entered in 1986 as the first four-wheel drive car, and to finish seventh in a field of prototypes is quite the statement, and birthed the first true Porsche supercar in the process; an incredible thing." The car returned to La Sarthe in '87 but retired in a fire, and went back to Stuttgart. It's been rebuilt and restored and has demoed at various events over the last few years. Pratt & Miller's extraordinary success with Chevrolet's Corvette in various guises is legendary, and much of it was driven by the might of the Chevrolet LS7 engine. "The C6.R GT1 was a monster of a machine," says Oliver Gavin, who racked up a hat-trick of Le Mans wins between 2004 and 2006 with Corvette, twice with the C6.R. "I can still picture myself, and hear the with raw mix of the V8 & V12 sound, racing side by side with Peter Kox coming down into the second chicane lap one of the race in 2006. The sound was unreal, a core Le Mans 24 hours memory for me." It was a period of ridiculous, intense competition in the GT1 class. First with Ferraris, then Aston Martins, Prodrive was the main rival, and the battles were fierce. "This was the golden period in GT racing, with Corvette Racing vs Prodrive Aston Martin. There was fierce competition, but great respect between the two teams and driver line ups. Corvette Racing, the same #64 crew & driver lineup went three in a row in class. Jan Magnussen, Olivier Beretta and me. But Aston got their revenge in 2007 and 2008!" As an impressionable teen, that era staked endurance racing directly into my heart. After my older brother finished playing, I would take control of the Playstation 2, fire-up Gran Turismo 4 and sink hours driving the Pescarolo’s 2004 Courage Judd-GV5. Sometimes I would even set up endurance races before swimming lessons or visits to my grandparents, letting the AI cruise around for opening stints before coming home and taking up driving duties. My earliest memories of Le Mans as an entity are intrinsically linked to those iconic blue and green Pescarolo cars – which is why I’ve picked the stunning C60 Hybrid from 2005. Updated aerodynamics, a naturally-aspirated Judd V10 engine and a host of French talent behind the wheel, and you’re looking at a machine that is Le Mans to its very core. The #16 car from that year should have won the race, an incredible home victory, but mechanical issues plagued the updated car from the second hour onwards. In a classic tortoise-versus-hare, despite getting back on track and setting the pace, the deficit to Audi was too big to overturn, and second place was as good as it would get for the #16. Le Mans to me is Pescarolo blue and green. …which is why you’ll find those colours on the Only Endurance logo! All my art is giclée printed on gorgeous 315gsm paper, and is supplied unframed. Bringing a Nascar to Le Mans, letting it rip for 24 hours for no real reason other than for the hell of it? Yeah, that's badass. It won its class, if you can win a class with only one car in it. Who cares? It was, and remains, a crowd favourite. Yes, the halftone shading on this one is all stars. Because 'Murica. It's arguably the most famous car in the race's history, but it came from a history of class winning – when the only other cars in the class were team-mates – and midfield finishes. But that's part of what makes it so special. "It's the true underdog story," says Sam Hignett. He's the boss of Jota Sport, and he's got more Le Mans races behind him than most. "They came as a fairly small team, with an unproven type of engine, and went and won it and the car became an icon!" That unproven type of engine was the wankel, which for reasons I simply can't understand is better known as the rotary. Through a quirk of the Group C rules it had a slight advantage on fuel, and the team used that to perfection. The car's now the ultimate Mazda advert, and it travels the world. "We have an affinity with at Jota, too," adds Hignett, whose workshop is the car's home-away-from-hime. "When it's in Europe we look after it. So we've run it at Le Mans, and in the parade, and at Goodwood. It's just a really cool car! My ears are bleeding just thinking about it. Soon, every mechanic in the team was known as Manfred. Two years ago, Manfred took his first Le Mans win as a chief mechanic with the GR010, and Buemi, Hartley and Hirakawa. "All the pressure was on us," he says. They rose through it, finishing ahead of the team-mate car by less than a lap, with perfect strategy and pitstops throughout. One year later, they were second. "Everyone was thinking we couldn't repeat the 2022 performance," he says of the '23 race. "There were some late changes, and then we hit a squirrel, and we had some debris in the radiator, and we still almost won." Will they win this year? Only time will tell. "We know what we can do," reckons Manfred. We've all seen what they can do before... All my art is giclée printed on gorgeous 315gsm paper, and is supplied unframed. More than 300,000 are expected at this year's 24 Hours, and each one of them will have different reasons for being there, different favourites, and different stories. "Martyn & I are huge fans of endurance racing and love watching the greatest race in the world," says Sarah Rigby. "The whole weekend is sacred - it's a case of 'disturb me at your peril'!" Sarah, and her husband Martyn, are both enormous fans of Aston Martin. Proper, dyed-in-the-wool AMR fans. Cut either of them in half, and they'd have the logo down the middle like a stick a rock. "Nothing makes my heart race more than the LMGTE Pro class win for the #97 Aston Martin Racing Vantage in 2017," continues Sarah, who was one of many left slack-jawed by an unbelievable late battle for the class win. "My stomach was knotted, finger nails chewed, my voice was hoarse from shouting. "I was a blubbering wreck and bursting with so much pride for all our AMR family when they won." But her choice of favourite car sees the aligning of stars, with her favourite brand and one of her favourite drivers together in 2023. "We have been fans of Valentin Hasse-Clot for several years now and have followed his racing in various series, from the comfort of our sofa," says Sarah, who without hesitation picked this particular car from Aston's storied history at La Sarthe. "We were very excited that he was going to race in the centenary race last year, and in such a stunning car. The livery was a tribute to Henri Pescarolo, and we loved it." You're driving in the #3 car, known as 'Old Number 7' since it had raced as #7 in 1926, crashing out of third place in sight of the line. It's wild. "Safety" is a word associated with the matches you use to light your pipe, and it is certainly not a word associated with either your machinery, nor the barely-paved country roads you're racing on. "This period of Le Mans is pure endurance," says Lewis Fox. He's recently stepped away from Formula One to work with Kingsbury Racing, an engineering firm specialising in vintage racing Bentleys. Quite a contrast, and a choice made out of passion. "A pair of drivers, no support from pit crews, on a track that was still multiple surface, and in pretty terrifying machinery." Night has fallen, and you come around a bend to find the road in front of you blocked by two of your mates, in the other two Bentleys. They've crashed into each other and both are out on the spot. You collide with one of them, and your car is pretty heavily damaged, with a bent axle, buggered headlight and smashed fender. "The story of 'Old Number 7' tells everything that makes Bentleys, and the drivers who raced them, incredible," Fox continues. Your machine is still going, and you're still going, so you put the crash behind you and soldier on. A torch is strapped to your car so you can see, ish, and almost 20 hours later you are the winner of the 1927 24 Hours of Le Mans. By 20 laps. "The Bentley story is one of the shortest lived success stories around. It was a business that spanned just over a decade in its proper form, but managed to conquer the greatest endurance race ever multiple times." The monocoque from the car would go on to be Courages LC70 and 75, the Orecas LC70, 01 and 03, as well as the Formula Le Mans spec class chassis and finally, the Acura and HPD ARX-01 (A, B, C, D, E and G!) and 03 cars. Not unlike TWR's XJR-14/Mazda/Joest/Porsche! Honda Performance Development (HPD)'s work with the car created the rather shapely ARX-01, known sometimes as Acuras and sometimes as HPDs. It's too complicated to get into. Its principle exponent in American racing was Duncan Dayton's Highcroft Racing, where the Tequila Patrón green and black became synonymous with the American Le Mans Series. "It's hard to choose a favourite Le Mans car," says John Hindhaugh, of Radio Le Mans. "I could say the West McLaren, because it was the Sunderland antidote to the black and white [John refrains to mention why it was black and white, ed.] Lister Storm and we had a lot of fun with that. Or I could say the Toyota GT-One, an incredible design that never won the race." For "Hindy", however, it was Highcroft's partnership with the Malaria No More charity that led to one of his favourite Le Mans memories. "It has to be the Malaria No More Highcroft car," he surmises. "It's a cause we all really believe in, and they kindly put our name on the car to recognise our support." Hindhaugh's relationship with Le Mans is long and storied, but nowhere near as long and storied as the race itself, and that story is what brings him back year after year. Like many others I've spoken to for this series, he speaks about it almost like an addiction. "When you think about big events, and this is one of the biggest, they have an atmosphere of their own," he muses. "Even before anybody turns up, there's something that's already talking to you. There's a promise of what's to come, but always at Le Mans particularly, of what's gone by. I always take a moment to go out on to the grid and stand in front of the 1955 memorial, and if you walk a little further there's another plaque, to the French resistance. It's history, it's the sense of being involved in something, whether you're a driver, a team member, or a broadcaster. "For the people for whom it's important, it's very important." From his infectious laughter to his pure joy to be living the life so many of us dream to, he was one of a kind. Nobody had more fun being a professional in rallying than Craig, and his infectious spirit is much-missed. During the 2023 Rally Sweden, his exploits on the Brattby stage led him to quip, "I could probably be the mayor of Brattby at this stage!", which quickly became a kinda trademark for the Irishman. If, like me, you'd vote for Craig to be the mayor not just of Brattby but motorsport as a whole, then this is the T shirt for you. I wanted to create something that celebrated Craig's legacy to Irish and global rallying, and captured just a small part of the joy he brought to me and countless others. This is produced with the permission of the Breen family, and £3 from each sale will go to the Craig Breen Foundation to directly contribute to extending his legacy and supporting Irish rallying going forward. "Don't let anybody ever put you down. Only you know your true potential." These T shirts are 100% cotton, 240GSM for a heavy feel, and slightly oversized. I chose this tee stock carefully to be the shirt I’d want to buy, so I’m making less margin on these to make sure it’s as good a product as possible. Wash at 30, and do it inside out to preserve the print as long as possible. Ironing the print might well reduce its life, too. I'll endeavour to get them to you as swiftly as possible, but postage delays (particularly to addresses outside the UK) are unpredictable, and out of my hands. This is also true for taxes and charges on import to your country.
